Killstar Magica Skater Dress – review

magica skater dress front

It goes without saying that I love velvet… and the Magica Skater Dress by Killstar is no exception. A fitted top and a flowy skirt is just what I tend to prefer for my body shape; I find skater dresses very flattering while still very comfortable to wear.

Made of soft and stretchy black velvet, this skater dress has an hexagram strap detail on the chest and an adjustable choker.
It’s pretty low cut both on the front and back, so you might need to try different options to find the right bra to go with it.
The shoulder straps and choker are adjustable, while the harness part is not (but it is very stretchy).

Side note worth mentioning: my hexagram appears to be slightly off center and I’ve meant to stitch back a couple of straps for a long time now; but honestly it’s not very noticeable when I move around so I keep putting it off.

There are two seams defining the chest area, but those are not shaped cups so the whole top part looks good wether your bust sits exactly in there or not. My bust is larger than the “cups” and I believe it still looks very good, even if the seams don’t sit at my underbust. The top portion of the dress is lined with a soft black cotton, while the skirt part is not, and so it falls nicely and can flow freely without clinging.

Another seam goes straight across the waist, where the skirt starts to flare out. There are vertical seams on both sides, and one of them has the hidden zip closure that goes beyond the waist seam and makes it very easy to get in and out of the dress.

Magica Skater Dress goes from size XS to 4XL – please note that there is a separate listing for 3XL and 4XL in the plus size section of Killstar’s website.
I am often in between sizes depending on the design, fabric and bust shape; I usually wear M in tops and dresses, sometimes L when I need more room on the bust.
At the moment of purchase, my usual size M went out of stock literally minutes before I could check out, so I bought this dress in a size L. It fits perfectly with still a bit of room thanks to the stretch in the fabric. I believe a size M would have been very fitted on me, but I’m happy with my choice and it’s one of the most comfortable dresses I own.

I’ve taken all measurements with the dress laying flat. I’m not a professional so these might not be 100% accurate but I hope it can help.
Please account some stretch as well.

Chest: 44cm from underarm to underarm
Waist: 37cm
Hips: free
85cm from top of the strap to bottom of the dress. The straps are adjustable.
72cm from top of the bust area to bottom of the dress
44cm from waist to bottom of the dress
Choker: 23cm to 40cm. Stretchy

Shell: 95% polyester, 5% elastane
Lining: 100% cotton
Made in China

As I said above, the cotton lining doesn’t go all the way down to the skirt.
Despite the velvet being polyester, I’ve found it surprisingly breathable and suitable for summer.

Care & washing instructions

Machine wash cold
Do not tumble dry
Do not dry clean
Iron on reverse
Wash with similar colours
Colour may transfer on to other garments
Hang to dry after removing excess water

My personal advice would be to not iron the dress at all, it would be risky and it really doesn’t need it! I hand wash (or machine wash on the delicates/handwash setting) and hang to dry all my velvets, and they always come out wrinkle free.
